Internet, business and profit are three words that come to mind when you think of the Internet. One more word is needed to combine all these terms into a successful fusion. Traffic. Every article you read about how to make your website or business successful emphasises the need to get visitors. So we all know that traffic is ultimately the most important factor for a successful internet business.

Aside from making sure you're selling a great product and that your company's internal organisation is in order, now is the time to get to work generating visitors. If you currently have a website and don't think you're getting as many visitors as you should, it's time to rethink your strategy.

If you're in a highly competitive industry, you need to stay one step ahead of your competitors, which means you should have started increasing your traffic yesterday. There's an old adage that everyone knows: timing is everything. However, when it comes to generating traffic, you must always be on your toes and one day ahead of the competition. Never look at today or tomorrow as the starting point for increasing traffic to your website; it should always be yesterday.

Here are seven techniques you can use to increase your traffic immediately and generate more traffic for your website:

1) Invest in effective search engine marketing. Adwords from Google and Overture from Yahoo are two popular advertising platforms that guarantee a lot of traffic. However, this tried and tested method of increasing traffic will cost you some money. While some people are reluctant to pay money to generate traffic, in this situation it is necessary because Adwords and Overture are the most effective methods for doing so. You can see for yourself how successful these search engine marketing strategies are for so many businesses. Many websites are using this advertising system and many people have signed up to benefit from it. Make sure that you are not left behind. Google and Yahoo advertising is worth the money.

2) Trade or exchange links with other websites. By exchanging links with other websites, you benefit from each other's efforts to increase traffic to your respective websites. When one website links to another, you can share the traffic that one website generates with it. Since it appears that you are both trying to increase traffic, your efforts are doubly valuable. The more websites you share links with, the more traffic you can expect.

3) Use viral marketing. Viral marketing allows you to spread information about your company and product for free or at very low cost. It is a covert marketing technique where you associate your company's name, product or link with a medium such as a funny video, an engaging game, an interesting article, a rumour or a buzz. People become so infected with the ingenuity and entertainment of the medium through this strategy that they will pass it on to a large number of people.

4) Carry out a keyword or keyword phrase search for the content of your website and use appropriate keywords or keyword phrases. Search engines look for specific keywords to display on their results pages. The right keyword and keyword phrase are a must in this case if you want to rank high in search engine results. You have the option of writing your own material or hiring someone to do it for you.

5) Write articles that bring visitors to your website. Send articles to websites that deal with the same topics as yours. Write press releases and articles about vehicles and car parts if you offer car parts. Include a description of your website and your offers as well as a link at the end of the article.

6) Participate in online forums and build online communities. Conquer a market and show your expertise and trustworthiness. People will trust you and your website once you have established a solid foundation, and they will pass that trust on to others. Because they realise that you can give them what they need, traffic will undoubtedly increase.

7) Finally, send out newsletters. If many people know what you do and your existence is well known, you will gain a loyal fan base that will recommend you to others. If you have aroused the interest of your customers, they will help you with advertising.
