The impact of automation on the economy and society
When it comes to the further development of production processes, automation is one of the most important goals. The term has a long tradition and is often used to describe revolutionary upheavals in the way the economy works. Where work steps are carried out automatically with the help of machines or intelligent technology, the efficiency of production can be significantly increased.
Throughout the history of mankind, there have been repeated bursts of automation. With the help of new technologies, progress has been taken to a new level. If entrepreneurs know how to utilise the existing possibilities of automation, they can capitalise on them.
Although there have been repeated bursts of automation, humanity is currently at a special historical point. The development of digital data processing and the construction of intelligent machines are opening the door to a whole new world. But what does the division of labour between humans and intelligent technology depend on? How will this type of automation change the economy and society?
This course offers you a comprehensive overview of exactly that. The individual chapters allow you to familiarise yourself with the current automation debate in a targeted manner.
If you are interested in the topic for personal reasons, this text will provide you with a good introduction. However, this course is also ideal as an introduction to the topic for entrepreneurs and managers who want to drive forward development processes in their company or establish a start-up on the market. As will become clear during the course, automation also brings with it ambivalent developments, particularly for the retail sector. More than in any other area of business, personal contact with the consumer is important in sales. This ensures things that the customer perceives as quality. This includes, for example, person-to-person advice, authentic dialogue in a pleasant atmosphere and advice on the products that best meet the customer's wishes and needs. Not all of these requirements can be met by automated processes. Sometimes automation even contradicts these requirements.
This means that, on the one hand, careful consideration must be given to what type of automation makes sense in this area and what does not. On the other hand, digital technology and social networks also create new opportunities.
This creates sales situations that are characterised by both automation processes and personalisation. This course also offers you an insight into such developments.
BONUS: You will receive the accompanying eBook free of charge with this course! What does it offer you?
You will gain a systematic insight into the automation debate and its impact on retail. The individual sections of the book build on each other. If you are already well versed in a particular area, you can skip the relevant section if necessary. Otherwise, it is advisable to read the book step by step from front to back. If you realise during this reading that you would like to deepen your knowledge in a particular area, you will also be given the relevant tips.
At the end of the book you will find references that were used in the creation of the eBook and may be helpful for further study of the topic. Simply select the relevant references here or use the authors listed in the index as a guide.
The first chapter is dedicated to clarifying important terms and phenomena. It explains what is meant by automation in general and how it develops. The concept of reproduction is also referred to here as another important pivotal point. It plays a major role in the digital age. The automated reproducibility of image material is also relevant here. This is because it is of fundamental importance both for the functioning of social networks and for marketing. Questions of automation therefore no longer only affect the processes that take place in companies' factories. They also play a decisive role in marketing and sales.
Having outlined the two phenomena of automation and reproduction, we will now turn our attention to the role of artificial intelligence. It is an important pillar of the technology that enables automation today and takes it away from humans. Smartphones, intelligent artefacts and self-thinking technology not only take over the completion of work. Intelligent technology is also taking control of the work process itself in some cases. This leads to a new level of automation.
We are only at the beginning of this development. It is therefore all the more important that we take a holistic view of it. This means that we must both support the technical development and keep an eye on the social consequences of using this technology. Not everything that is technically possible must also be implemented. This eBook looks at both levels - that of technical progress and that of the social impact of technical developments.
The next section of the book then deals with the economic opportunities and social risks of automation. The first section of this part of the book lays the necessary theoretical foundations. The eBook then turns to the specific effects in retail. This raises the question of how automation will affect this area of economic life. The next section is dedicated to the ambivalences that arise from automation processes, particularly in retail.
After all, retail depends on direct contact with customers like few other sectors. Many entrepreneurs do not know how to reconcile this requirement with automation. This eBook provides important suggestions from the current debates in economics and marketing.
The eBook then looks at opportunities for change in pricing resulting from automation today and explains the advantages and disadvantages that arise on the consumer side. However, as you will see in this section, automated pricing enables you to develop long-term sales strategies. It can therefore be used as an efficient means of improving sales. It's not just about undercutting your competitors as quickly as possible.
The last major chapter is then dedicated to the social impact of automation. It explains the risks and opportunities that can arise in connection with digital disruption. This section also explains new ways that retailers can choose to deal with the situation. These tips can provide important inspiration, especially if you are active in brick-and-mortar retail or operate an online sales organisation.
Possible future developments in sales that are not currently practised are also discussed in this last major section of the eBook. Simply regard these as suggestions from which you can develop your own practical proposals. After a final conclusion on the topic of automation, you will find references at the end of the book. These can help you to deepen your knowledge of the topic.
