Drinking water from large centralised plants in Germany continues to be of very good quality. This is the result of the latest report on drinking water quality published today by the Federal Environment Agency (UBA). As in previous years, exceedances of limit values are absolutely isolated cases. Even the problematic substance nitrate, which sometimes occurs in groundwater in excessive concentrations - particularly in areas where intensive agriculture is practised - has not exceeded the limit value in drinking water for several years. In almost all microbiological and chemical quality requirements, over 99.9 per cent of the monitored samples also comply with the strict legal requirements. In the current report, the UBA has published the results of the tests from all major water supplies for the years 2014 to 2016 - these supply around 88 per cent of the population in Germany. The report is based on the reports submitted by the federal states to the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) and the UBA.
