Few other countries are so strongly in favour of Europe. And it is an open Europe that Germany has been in favour of from the very beginning. In everyday political life as well as in particular times of crisis, other countries have always been able to rely on Germany assuming particular responsibility at European level. As part of this responsibility, Germany has campaigned for the establishment of good economic exchange from which as many countries in Europe as possible can benefit. In order to realise this goal, a stable European Union is indispensable. This is precisely what Germany has always worked towards and has been involved in many important measures. The country is grateful for the work it has done at European level.
But it was not only the goal of a self-contained economic unit that was taken into account. International openness for global world trade was also always taken into account. The EU maintains a lively exchange with many countries around the world. Germany has always supported this exchange. It has been just as committed to dismantling trade barriers as it has been to respecting human rights. And the commitment to both goals was equally important. Openness to migration was also important. This goal determined decisions at both European and national level.
With its decisions, Germany has ensured that German citizens can travel within the EU without any problems. This has not only resulted in many advantages for private holidays. This work also pays off professionally for many people. They can now take up a job in another EU country without any major problems. As a result of this openness, people can flexibly take on different jobs and also set up projects in countries other than Germany. In addition, many qualified skilled workers have also come to Germany. These have made a significant contribution to the economic prosperity of the Federal Republic of Germany. The political decision-makers are well aware of this.
That is why they have also campaigned for a strong but open Europe. Both Germany as a business location and many individual employees benefit from an EU modelled on this. This creates a quality that did not exist in Germany in the past. Today, it has become the norm for many people. Even travelling on holiday often makes this clear. In many cases, travelling on holiday is now much easier than it used to be. We can be grateful to Germany for the opportunities that an open EU brings.
