The warrior mindset is a lifestyle that changes the way we deal with obstacles, disappointments and hardships. As a result of modern conveniences - domestication - many of us have simply become too soft.

Whilst most of us don't have to fight or struggle most of the time, a life of ease and indulgence makes us weak and fragile, leaving us ill-equipped to deal with challenges when they arise.

Becoming a warrior requires a complete paradigm shift. It involves toughening up, learning to live a little more independently and dealing with obstacles. It also involves learning to defend yourself.

You don't have to be the next Bruce Lee or Batman to be successful. However, you should have a basic understanding of self-defence and know how to look after yourself. Here are a few important reasons why.

Self-defence can help you to defend yourself and others.

We may live in an age where violence and fights are relatively rare (thank goodness), but the reality is that you will still need to defend yourself from time to time. Whether you're involved in a bar fight or being attacked on the street. In such a situation, your ability to defend yourself can mean the difference between life and death, but also whether you can protect your family and return home alive.

Self-defence elevates you to the position of alpha dog.

The advantage of self-defence is sometimes not that it can help you win a fight, but how it makes you feel and how you approach a situation.

After all, physical ability and power are the most important assets in life. You can negotiate with someone or bribe them, but if your negotiating partner is stronger, faster or more dangerous, they ultimately have the last word on how things are settled.

You gain confidence and authority when you are able to fight when necessary. It makes you the 'alpha' of the group (yes, this also applies to women) and prevents others from pressurising you.

And if you are able to take care of yourself, you can act as you see fit without fear.

Discipline is taught through training.

Finally, learning self-care is a beneficial activity in and of itself. Martial arts training is a fantastic way to improve your physical and emotional well-being. Emphasising discipline is one of the most important aspects of mastering martial arts. In a tense situation, it is important to use the correct technique and remain calm. Practising the same kick over and over again and learning not to pay attention to your opponent, but simply to see an obstacle to be overcome.

If you apply this approach to other areas of your life, you will see a marked improvement in your ability to get things done, stay calm and take control of your own destiny.

That's why fighting is something that everyone should learn.
